Brincadeiras caseiras #3 - Caixas sensoriais | Sensorial boxes
When I started my research on activities to do with Tomás I found for the first time the concept of sensorial boxes. I read about it and interiorized but was not fully convinced. I kept thinking about it and one day I was in need to keep him busy and stimulated and decided to give it a try. I used some plastic bags to cover the floor, grabbed a box and filled it with flour, corn flakes and come cars and let's see where this goes. To my surprise he loved it, he played with it for 20 minutes or more completely focused in playing with the cars, eating corn flakes, tasting the flour and taking flour off the box. It was an absolute success!
After this we had flour all over and we had to vacuum but totally worth it. I say "we had to" because Tomás became number one fan of the vacuum cleaner, he wants to vacuum every day and cries when I say not now.
One or two days later we ended up improving a sensorial box without even noticing it. I was trying to work and he was sitting on my lap when he saw a cup of elastics on the desk and wanted to touch them. Without really thinking it over I grabbed all the elastics I had and put them in a box for him to explore. He was happy exploring it and putting them in and out the box for quite some time and only afterwards did I realize this was a sensorial box too.
After these successful experiences I started thinking about the next sensorial boxes I could prepare and funny enough, Tomás teacher started to send us some suggested activities and suggested we put up a sensorial box. That day the third sensorial box come up. This time I wanted something colourful so I mixed some pieces of straws, pieces of pipe-cleaners, mini-corks and some pieces of paper.
In the end what caught his attention were not the colours as I intended but the corks. He immediately started to pick the corks and transfer them to another box. This box did not keep his attention for as long as the previous ones but was still a success.
During my research I had seen this idea of painting ice from Anh and I remembered that I could adapt it. We had recently been exploring painting activities and I wanted something different now and I thought I could simple have some ice on a box and some cars. I used some ice cuvettes I have from IKEA with different shapes.
When I started to prepare the box, meaning taking the ice cubes from the cuvettes to the box, he immediately come up to the kitchen to see what I as doing. I laid out some beach towels on the floor and let him explore the box.
I called this box "Trip to Alasca" and Tomás was busy with it for a good amount of time exploring the temperature of the cubes, their taste, transferring them to another box and obviously throwing them all into the floor...
I had seen a lot of suggestion for colourful sensorial boxes with small toys, little stones, etc etc... But not only did I not have food colouring to dye salt, rice or something similar as I do not have many small toys (earth or see animals, trucks, etc). So I had to use what we have at home and I remembered the set if play food we have ( I bought for Tomás first carnival holyday because I needed a carrot, but this story is for another time); so I thought I could use the vegetables to make some sort of a vegetable garden, though many of the vegetables we have do not really grow underground... For tge dirt I mixed flour and powder chocolate. Why chocolate? Because last Christmas for some reason I don't really remember we saw a bag of 1kg of powder chocolate and bought it. Besides that I decided to add some chocapic flakes and they could be pieces of wood. Added some small wood spoons to pretend they were garden shovels.
It was a good idea, or so I thought, but this was the least successful sensorial box of all. He spent the entire time eating chocapic and tasting the powder chocolate and flour mix and couldn't care less about the vegetables.
Mental note: Don't use chocolate on sensorial boxes! Sensorial boxes need to be taste safe but they don't need to be so yummy, chocolate out!
